Mizrahi Caucus Event on Colonial Education in the Middle East & North Africa
July 25 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join JFREJ’s Mizrahi Caucus and special visitor Adam Eilath, who will be leading a talk and discussion around the Alliance Israelite Universelle, a 19th and 20th century colonial Jewish educational institution that brought “progressive, civilized, enlightenment” values to Jewish communities in the Middle East, Balkans and North Africa. Adam will bring some primary sources that describe the mission, daily life and educational program of the school system. The AIU was the largest Jewish educational institution with the widest geographic reach in history. One of the legacies of the school was that it began the process of modernization that led to the destruction and fragmentation of Jewish tradition in many Sephardic and Mizrahi institutions. By examining the model, program and legacy of the school system we can learn a great deal about how different Jewish cultures interact in both North America and Israel today. Adam is a teacher and administrator at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco. He has experience working with a number of Sephardic and Mizrahi organizations in Canada, Israel and the United States. He has been teaching at the high school level for 6 years and frequently gives community lectures in the Bay Area on the topics of Sephardic and Mizrahi Rabbinic thought, literature, poetry and history. He has been published in MyJewishLearning and Shmah magazine.
NOTE: This event is open to members of JFREJ caucuses (Jews of Color, Mizrahi & Sephardi Jews, Jews Raised Poor or Working Class)
