On Sunday, May 16th, join the JFREJ Freedom to Thrive campaign in 7 locations across New York City in observing the holiday of Shavuot and fighting for community-based solutions for our collective safety instead of reliance on policing. At each location we will learn how to be an upstander to hate violence and canvass our neighborhoods in favor of investing in community alternatives to policing that don't endanger Black and Brown New Yorkers, but keep ALL of us safe. Shavuot emphasizes the importance of studying the Torah and Jewish values, values which include protecting and loving our neighbors. We'll also be uplifting 7 demands in connection to community-based approaches to safety to be incorporated into the New York City budget, which our local legislature is currently negotiating. In light of the recent spike in hate violence along with the ongoing crisis of police violence, it's more important than ever that we invest in restorative justice and community safety, rather than turning to the NYPD.
Freedom to Thrive is a JFREJ initiative, and this event is made possible with support of partners including Repair the World NYC, Presbytery of New York City, local synagogue leaders, and community advocates.
