Right now, New Yorkers without homes are being rushed out of hotels and back into unhealthy congregate shelters. These shelters have low vaccination rates (right now it’s 20%) and new COVID-19 variants are more transmissible. People who refuse to re-enter those unsafe shelters choose or are forced to live on the street and are subject to NYPD "sweeps." And this is all happening while we're waiting for action on a bill already passed by the City Council that would make an estimated 70,000 apartments available for low-income New Yorkers. Enough is enough!
We are gathering this Thursday, July 29, in the morning to cap a month of city-wide demonstrations, led by organizers in the 30 Days for Homeless Rights Coalition, to say:
DE BLASIO: FIX YOUR FAILURES, HOUSE HOMELESS NEW YORKERS NOW!
We’re asking de Blasio to immediately put a stop to the transfers, stop ordering the NYPD to harass people who are experiencing homelessness, and to take emergency action on Intro 146, a bill to increase the value of housing vouchers and permanently house people experiencing homelessness.
